Grado Prestige Green Standard Mount Turntable Cartridge Review

Grado Prestige Green Standard Mount Turntable Cartridge
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I was looking for a new cartridge for my turntable three years ago, I checked several online forums and one of the few things that they agreed on was that the Grado Prestige series was one of the best values. price vs sound quality.
The last 3 years, In my experience has proved them right.
Grado Labs Prestige series starts out with the Black cartridge these use a 3 piece cantilever assembly. The best 15% of the black cartridges in there sound quality tests are the Green cartridges.
Next up the scale are Blue and Red, these use the 4 piece cantilever assembly, with red the best 10% of the blue cartridges.
At the top of the scale are the silver and gold cartridges. these use a 4 peice cantilever assembly and a higher quality copper wire for the windings. the top 5% of the silver become the gold cartridges.
There are also a mono version, a DJ version, and two 78 rpm versions of the Prestige series.

Numark Groove Tool Cartridge & Stylus Review

Numark Groove Tool Cartridge and Stylus
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This cartridge came in a Numark TTUSB Turntable I recently bought when the prices came down on this item. As many of my 45 RPM Records I bought back in the 50's and 60's do exhibit a lot of playing wear ( especially on the Big Hit favorites ) I was not expecting too much from this cartridge.
Unfortunately any kind of published specifications on this cartridge are not easily found. My first reaction was to remove this cartridge from the TTUSB and replace it with one of my Shure M44-C Cartridges that I have used for many years. For the older and somewhat worn records I like to track at 4 to 5 grams as that is what they were always played on with a conical .7 mil Diamond stylus. The .5 to 2 gram limitations on many of todays cartridges just dont track well in a worn record groove and a higher rate of distortion in the playback is evident.
When I saw this cartridge and it's low price, I ordered one primarily to have it for the replacement stylus and also in hope that it would include some kind of electrical and mechanical specifications on the package, which it did.
For those of you who are also wondering what the specs are before you buy it, here is what was written on the back of the blister pak it comes in ( Mounting Hardware is also included ).
Standard half inch mounting
0.6 Mil spherical Diamond Tip
Tracking Force2.5 to 3.5 Grams
Channel Separation 26Db @ 1 Khz
Output 2.4 Mv
a Pin Out diagram is also shown and it states " Designed in the USA, Made In Japan
While setting up the TTUSB Numark Turntable, I maxed out the stylus pressure ( as measured on a calibrated Neuses Guage ) to 3.5 Grams. I tried some well worn 45's that just didn't make it on a 1.5 gram pressure stylus on one of my Ortofon Cartridges. These records did sound OK on a Shure M44-C and a Pickering V15ATE both tracking at just a little over 4 Grams. The sound from the Numark Groove Tool Budget Cartridge was compatible with the Shure M44-C and the Pickering V15ATE for playing older records " with Wear " . I was pleasantly surprised to say the least.
I also tried playing some of my high quality " Command Records " ( Remember those ? ) and I am still quite impressed.
I have now ordered a bunch of replacement stylii for this cartridge as I think I will just leave it in the Numark TTUSB.
Yes, the stylus " grip " does get somewhat close to the playing surface of the record as an earlier reviewer pointed out. If you are not playing severely warped records this should not be a problem, and remember I am tracking at the Maximum specified tracking weight. I am not using this in a " DJ " situation so back queing does not concern me.
I have not yet been able to find any published spec for the frequency response of this cartridge although it does put a smile on my face when playing many of my original 50 and 60 year old 45's as I transfer them to digital format.
I have had many Record Changers ( remember those ? ), Turntables, cartridges and stylii over the years made by well known manufacturers . Although I would never call myself an " Audio Purest " by any means, I know what I like to hear and I do hear that from this cartridge.
For the price of the cartridge and for replacement stylii I would consider at this price point a very worthwhile item if it will suit your requirements. I am quite surprised and very well pleased with its performance.

I was incredibly surprised to find that I could find this Shure replacement stylus on Amazon. I have a stereo system that over 45 years old and finding any parts for it, I thought would be impossible, but there it was on Amazon. It works fine. I can hear those pops, whistles and scratches on my old forty-fives and albums. In the future, I will be ordering from Amazon often.

I bought this cartridge for a rather inexpensive Numark model turntable; the original needle popped the very first time I played a record! Carl Cox's design "hugs" the record so well that I haven't, as of yet, noticed any skipping, even while playing older records. The price may scare you, but I made the plunge, and I have absolutely no regrets.

I purchase two cartridges w/ stylus (Ortofon Concorde S) a couple weeks back, when I got them they were both blemished as if they had been used before and one of them outright didn't work. So I sent them back and only got one back in return, fortunately it was unblemished and actually worked nicely. After calling Amazon sent the second one, which came after a week since UPS lost the package. However, this one also didn't work, I tested it on a couple different turntables to make sure - it still didn't work. So I decided to send them back, Amazon claims it is the manufacturer's fault, regardless I will never buy dj equipment from Amazon again and I will definitely not buy Ortofon.

Shure V15VXMR Audiophile Phono Cartridge Review

Shure V15VXMR Audiophile Phono Cartridge
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Can vinyl playback get any better than this ? It's a possibility (with more expensive elite or esoteric name brand cartridges). However, spending more does not necessarily guarantee you will get more or better sound. I have spent my hard earned $$$ on Grado audiophile cartridges and they cannot match up to this Shure cartridge.I have also bought Audio Technica budget carts and their AT 120E. I finally bought their AT 440ML (their best MM cartridge so far---bright, bassy, clean output, great detail, but not strong on tracking all sibilants like the Shure).I once owned a Shure V15 RS cartridge (sold by Radio Shack and assembled in Mexico---so what, the sound and tracking qualities were stupendous)! However, It was time to upgrade to the V15VxMR cart.
Take the V15VxMR for example. Here are it's audiophile quality strong points: It tracks with the utmost accuracy from beginning to end. Not just in it's warm and musical characteristics, but also extracts those words or vocal lyrics in the grooves of those black licorice discs that begin or end with the letters s,z, f, t, p ...The stylus reproduces these consonants with pure silky smooth sibilance (sibilants). No harsh or edgy static-like "s" words, etc. cutting into your ears or the room ! Inner groove distortion is practically non-existant (of course depending if you are playing a well cleaned record that has not been abused or worn out). I used to hate it when the tonearm would play the last two tracks on either side and the cartridge and stylus could not keep up.This would produce degraded sound. Fast musical movements, vocals, loud and fast passages were horrific, grainy and just plain shrill. The Shure cartridge overcomes this by a major landslide.
Another beautiful plus is the absence of ear and mind fatigue over any lengthy period of music listening ( sounds that are bright and harsh and ,yes, edgy). A few have criticized the Shure V15VxMR for not being sharp in the upper frequencies or having that "wow" factor in reference to it's smooth, warm, and sometimes silky quality. The major benefit of this neutrality or warmness is that it allows you to really be able to listen to musical and vocal detail that you can't really hear with cartridges that sound harshly or overly bright(that's where the ear fatigue comes in) ! Also, since the birth of the cd and other digitized music formats, many have grown accustom to or have only experienced the bright and artificial digital sound. Therefore, some have no idea or have forgotten how musical and natural a good clean analog or vinyl record can sound to the human ear as well as being a relaxing experience.Sometimes less is more... The V15VxMR is warm and some will say neutral. No exaggerations or coloration of sound. No piercing artificial highs or harsh mids. Bass reproduction is firm and natural.Stereo soundstage is well separated and dispersed. The biggest miracle of all is that it tracks optimally at only 1 gram !! No more carving into your valued albums with cheap cartridges or styli that require a heck of a lot of weight or gram application to achieve somewhat decent sound retrieval !
The stabilizer brush does serve several purposes. It counteracts static, acts as a shock absorber for warped lps, and CLEANS the record as it plays; This also kills two birds---cleans the record and also keeps the stylus clean as well before that unwanted dust hits it. Record surface noise is the LOWEST I have heard compared to any cartridge I have ever owned in all my years ! With it's exceptionally clean tracking and minimum surface noise I often forget I'm listening to a record...In this regard the Shure almost mimics the background silence of a cd between tracks.
Mounting instructions are a breeze. Alignment can get tricky but can be accomplished. All the necessary gear to mount with instructions are generously included in a nice silver metallic-like box. Shure treats this cartridge as a precious gem with good reason(s).
Now the sad news...As of this past fall, Shure has ceased production on this beauty. Website explains the high cost in obtaining the expensive materials and the lack of people having a hankering for vinyl. There will only be replacement stylii for a limited time until even those run out in early of 2005. What's left cartridge-wise is a limited stock on hand from a few reputable hi-fi audio stores online and eBay...In addition, be careful of price gougers as well. Not that I was gouged, but I could have saved about $30 bucks on mine had I seen the ones being sold through Amazon.com sellers and eBay !
The V15VxMR passes these audiophile ears with flying colors. This is the cartridge you definitely want to use when transferring your valuable records to cd-r digital format. If price is an issue, a super alternative is the Audio Technica AT 440ML.However,the Audio Technica is on the opposite end of the sonic spectrum of the Shure; it's a pretty bright sounding cartridge ! It's got it's own bang for the buck qualities as well ...The bottom line is that when you listen to the Shure V15VxMR you forget you're listening to a needle and record unlike an Audio Technica cartridge (you know it's mechanical presence is there along with the music).Just like certain high end audiophile speakers "disappear" and you only hear the music, the same can be said of the Shure; it disappears and all you hear is MUSIC !!
LP's I've used to give the Shure cartridge a workout or test:
1)Kate Bush "Hounds of Love" (filled with plenty of soft female vocal "s" words and heavy electronic percussion and synth work not easily tracked by lesser cartridge). The Shure passed!
2)The Ink Spots Greatest Hits (rich-deep male vocals and jazz music). The Shure captured every detail and nuance on this mono 60's pressing.
3)Eddie And The Cruisers-Orig. Soundtrack (rock instruments, drums, electric guitars, fast musical mudulations and movements sound crystal clear---no break ups).Male vocalist enunciates clearly and intelligibly.
4)Stevie Ray Vaughan "Couldn't Stand The Weather" (his guitar work beautifully recreated---felt like a live concert---gives the "you are there" ambiance).
5)David Becker Tribune "Third Time Around"-(contains an awesome acoustic guitar instrumental that sounds natural and real).
6)Pat Metheny Group "First Circle" ( very inviting, smooth feel with the keyboards and acoustic instruments).

Stanton Trackmaster II RS Phono Cartridges (Pair) Review

Stanton Trackmaster II RS Phono Cartridges (Pair)
Average Reviews:

Don't be fooled by the image you see of this product on Amazon.
Sure you get a pair of StantonTrackmaster II RS Phono Cartridges which are great in every respect.........What you don't get is the extra needles as displayed in the image of the product on Amazon.
Very misleading......
You also don't get the cartridges packaged in velvet, but rather they come in a see through case and the cartridges are suspended in the case by rather poor quality hard plastic which rattles in the case, as opposed to being securely packaged in velvet as displayed in the Amazon image.
Suffice to say as a result of the poor product packaging, I received my cartridges with chips to the silver paint work.........covers meant to protect the needles on the cartridges were loose inside the product packaging and the plastic product packaging was scratched and chipped in several places.
My advise would rather be to view this product and buy from a shop even if it costs a few $ more, that way at least you will be buying what you see unlike the misleading image of the product on Amazon.
Disappointed !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Grado Prestige Black 1.5 Mount Turntable Cartridge Review

Grado Prestige Black 1.5 Mount Turntable Cartridge
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I liked this little cartridge for the under the $50 mark...It's a very honest cartridge in that it does not pretend to be an elite audiophile sounding cartridge and then show it's shortcomings.Basically, it would also be a moot point in trying to compare it with Grado's high end audiophile carts such as the Sonata, Statement or Platinum models---those are way ahead of the Black in terms of everything in sound and build quality ! The Grado Prestige Black is basically an entry-level hi-fi or audiophile cartridge that begins to give you a sample of what the more expensive good stuff could be like. It's just a "whiff"...
I utilized this cart for a few months on a secondary turntable I owned. It offered a natural but not completely neutral sounding quality. There was no mind or ear fatigue whatsoever as is often the case with listening to "bright" sounding or colored sounding cartridges that tend to exaggerate the mids and higher frequencies or give off a certain resonance. There was no exaggerated boomy bass (only firm and focused bass) or ear piercing highs.Period.One of it's strengths is it's uncanny ability to reproduce the mids as well as male and female vocals with near accuracy and believability. So, for the modest price range, it does it's job exceptionally well...
Now( and here's the "honest" part), the Grado Prestige Black is going to show it's slight weakness in overcoming inner groove sound distortion and it's inability in tracking harsh consonants/sibilants. It can be "spitty" at times and depending on the quality or condition of the record. Keep in mind, for the price point, you are getting something that's a bit above average in quality if you were to compare it with other name brands in the same low budget audiophile bracket...
The cartridge's specs, pricing, and playback qualities are right upfront and on the table...This is an elliptical stylus designed cart and not an advanced fine micro-line stylus tracer which would outperform the Grado Prestige Black in many ways (basically, while an elliptical needle performs way better than a spherical or conical shaped one, it still has it's sonic limitations).Even though the Grado Black Prestige will show very minimal tracking weaknesses or inner groove tracking errors, it gets four stars for it's exceptional budget value and noble performance in it's overall believable and natural musical quality !

Audio Technica P-Mount Phono Cartridge (1001) (1001) Review

Audio Technica P-Mount Phono Cartridge (1001) (1001)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a turntable enthusiast (yes, there are plenty of us around who have an affinity to vinyl still) over the years I have owned a gamut of different brand name cartridges. It is through trial and error and experimentation that you begin to see or rather hear what all the fuss, differences, and nuances are about each individual cartridge. Not to mention some of their shortcomings as well. I have owned Audio Technica cartridges, Shure cartridges, and my favorite, Grado cartridges over the years.
The first striking characteristic about the Audio Technica 1001(common with the Audio Technica cartridges) will be the way high frequencies are slightly exaggerated. Bass response is firm but not boomy or too tight. There is a lack of midrange punch. This cartridge/stylus is very similar to the conical Audio Technica 90 cartridge in quality, sound and value. Sibilances (when the letter s is pronounced by the vocalist/s) will sound a bit harsh or grainy and not have the normal and warm nature associated with higher end cartridges (Grado Prestige series). The overall tonal playback response will be light and airy. Another unnecessary characteristic of Audio Technica cartridges is that they pick up a lot of surface noise from the record regardless how clean the lp may be. This particular cartridge is not very neutral sounding nor does it put out a "warm" or "natural" musical feel as higher end cartridges do. This one is purely for listening to a small meager collection of pop-rock lps and not classical or jazz or any style of music where there are rapid or difficult musical passages with classical instruments (strings in particular).
Since this is a p-mount, not much stylus pressure can be applied if you own a turntable with separate counterbalance weight or antiskating mechanisms. In fact, most P-mount cartridges will only allow stylus pressure weight settings from 1.5g to 1.7g setting.
In sum, this is a quick plug and play stylus for someone who just wants to hear pop music on a casual basis. For the audiophile or audio perfectionist the AT P-mount 1001 just won't cut it !... Audio Technica does produce a high end cartridge that uses a linear cut diamond, the AT 440 ML. The advantage of a linear stylus is that it will accurately and more faithfully reproduce the music. It has been cut in such a way that the linear needle actually mimics the way the record was cut by the record company's equipment. However, it will set you back triple the amount of what the AT 1001 is priced at. Plus, you must own a turntable that will accept standard mount. You can always connect a standard mount cartridge and even a p-mount (with the proper adaptor kit) to a standard headshell. However, you cannot connect a standard mounting cartridge to a P-mount only tonearm...

While looking for a new Cartridge for my Sony Turntable, I stumbled upon the "ION Audio iCT04 DJ". I was desperate for a new Cartridge and the price was right. For only $22.95, I ordered it. Installing it was a breeze and only took me 5 min at the most. After setting the weight, I threw on some vinyl, and i couldn't believe how much better it sounded than my last cartridge. It might not be the best, but it sure is the best for the price. I've pretty much played my turntable everyday and have not had a single problem. I'm definitely happy with this buy.
