Stanton STR8150 High Torque Direct Drive DJ Turntable Review

Stanton STR8150 High Torque Direct Drive DJ Turntable
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Stanton is promoting this turntable to the mixing/scratching set. However, if you're an old coot like me who just wants a good quality turntable that will play your LP's, 45's and 78's, this is the one to get.
The STR8-150 is solidly built; the entire thing weighs about 36 pounds. The platter is a little lighter than some other turntables I've seen, but there's just no rumble at all. There are both analogue and digital outputs that allow you to hook up the turntable to practically any stereo, home theater system or computer (no special phono-level inputs required).
A bonus feature of this turntable is the variable speed control that allows you to actually play records as low as 16 rpm (used for some special use records) or up to 90 rpm (used on many early acoustic "78's").
A good quality Stanton cartridge comes with the turntable and a 78 stylus is available for it.
The only thing missing is a dust cover or an option to buy one as an accessory.

The ultimate night-club, party, or compilation tool, Stanton's rugged and graceful STR8-150, with its skip-proof straight tone arm, offers everything professional DJs need--and nothing they don't. In creating the STR8-150, Stanton went back to basics and re-engineered everything, using quality as its prime consideration. The 'table uses durable steel construction designed to minimize feedback, an ultra-stable platter and tone arm, and an industry-leading high-torque motor producing more than 4.5 Kgf-cm.Key features include key correction, reverse playback, up to +/-50 percent pitch adjustment, 3-speed playback (33-1/3, 45, and 78), and even an S/PDIF coaxial digital-audio output so you can plug the turntable directly into a CD recorder, digital surround receiver, or PC/Macintosh sound card. Adjustable start and break speeds let you tailor the quartz-lock 'table's action to your mixing style. When key correction is on, the pitch slider will only affect the speed of the platter. The key, or tone, will remain at 0 percent. This is ideal for bringing song B up to the tempo of song A for a seamless mix, without altering the tonal makeup of song B.The STR8-150 also includes adjustable feet, a slipmat, "L"-shaped cables, and the Stanton 680HP cartridge mounted on headshell. What's in the Box Platter, tone arm, cartridge and headshell, counterweight, slipmat, L-shaped cables, a 45 rpm adapter, a user's manual, an AC power cord, a target light, and warranty information.

So I bought this because I wanted to bring my turntables with me to college-- which meant flying with them. The flight case kept everything my tables in perfect condition despite the inevitable jumbling and carelessness of baggage handlers. The only downside is that it's a little heavy to carry around, esp. with the turntables in them. Other than that, it's a little bigger than some other flight cases I've seen, but that's probably due to thicker walls and extra padding-- i'd say worth it if you plan on travelling with them and need to keep your babies safe.

Technics SL1200MLK2 TurnTable Review

Technics SL1200MLK2 TurnTable
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've known some people to still own a manually operated Technics that has lasted over 25 years (the beauty of a manual is no extra gizmos or electronics to break down or mechanically and annoyingly affect pure playback) ! If you want proof just look at how many Denon or other top brand name turntables listed on E-Bay will often carry a disheartening claimer by the seller that reads something like, "turntable works fine except automatic tonearm or speed chip sensor does not work properly".Lesson learned is to stay away from turntables with a lot of "computerized-electronic sensing automatic features". So, no, this 'table is not an automatic nor is it for the lazy listener who will fall asleep only to wake up and find the needle has been scratching and bumping at the end of playing. Once you damage your needle in this fashion you will never make the mistake of falling asleep again while playing it.... But, again, the trade off or sacrifice is worth it versus having an automatic tonearm malfunctioning with time. It was first and foremost designed back in the 70's as a mid-priced audiophile turntable for home consumer use and later incorporated as the reference or standard dj equipment for radio stations and then dj/scratching venues. Over the years Technics has fine tuned and tweaked what was already, in my opinion, an almost perfected machine. While audiophile purists and snobs gasp at the thought of using a direct drive 'table to hear their precious vinyl collection, I for one don't mind a direct drive over a belt drive. Advantages of a direct drive is no belt to replace, wow & flutter are almost non-existant (since the platter is driven by the spindle shaft motor directly), speed accuracy is on target. Some purists have pointed out that this 'table is not "dead" sounding enough and may produce some rumble or motor vibration noise when listening to extreme quiet passages on classical disc pressings. So far I have tested some classical records and cannot hear any unwanted vibrations coming from the motor or disturbing noises. In fact, Technics makes one of the best turntables with a very quiet and smooth running motor. The plinth is heavily weighed down and isolated from unwanted vibrations that would otherwise be picked up by the cartridge.Over the years I have owned a fully automatic-remote controlled Kenwood table, a Pioneer 'table, and an el cheapo Sears LXI 'table...All of these turntables ended up in a junk pile in Siberia due to their cheap plastic nature and gamut of so-called bells and whistles. Technics is the only one for those, like myself, not yet to make it into the higer end audiophile arena with 'tables costing from $1000.00 and beyond price range realm. I have used everything from a cheap Audio Technica cartridge to a mid priced Shure cartridge and finally a Grado Prestige cartridge (the Grado being the best in sound quality, price and workmanship).Whether you decide to use an Ortofon DJ cartridge/needle for DJ/scratching purposes or a Grado audiophile cartridge for in home listening you will be thrilled of the workmanship and sound quality of this finely crafted and engineered product ! As a plus, the Technics is an aesthetically pleasing piece of audio gear to look at and realize some solid materials were used to produce it...Finally, who would have thunk decades ago that the Technics 1200 would carry the distinction to be used as a "DJ instrument" for scratching (the motor is that strong) as well as being dubbed the honorary title of the true "Wheel of Steel"!

Grado Prestige Silver Standard Mount Turntable Cartridge Review

Grado Prestige Silver Standard Mount Turntable Cartridge
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this cartridge for my Technics 1200 turntable, having already owned the budget Black model. The Silver does everything the Black does but better. It is fuller sounding with deeper bass and a more articulate midrange. More importantly, the soundstage is wider and deeper.
In my review of the Black, I felt it was like a low cost moving coil with excellent presentation of small details and a very neutral balance. The Grado sound is natural, warm yet detailed. There is no brightness. And while the Black can sound a bit small and lean the Silver serves up a bigger fuller sound while retaining all of the positive virtues of its less expensive stable mate. My listening includes jazz, classical and rock. I think the Grados are good with all kinds of music but I am most impressed with their natural presentation for classical and opera records.
At the price of the Silver, only the Denon DL110 offers actual high output moving coil performance. Ortofon has one for slightly more money. The Silver is actually a special moving iron design which Grado has used and refined for decades. The Grados are made in the USA.
Visually the Silver is identical to the Black except there are two silver dots on either side of the stylus holder indicating which model it is.
One thing I must warn about however is that this cartridge can hum on certain turntables that use unshielded motors. There are no hum issues on my Technics or Pioneer direct drives or my old Thorens 166 but it is a slight issue on my Rega. The Grado sounds fine at normal levels on the Rega (so not an issue for me)but hums when the cartridge gets close to the end of the side and near the motor (when played at very high volumes). It also hums noticeably on my older 1979 vintage Toshiba Direct Drive. This cartridge is also only an average tracker and certainly no match for the likes of a Shure or Nagaoka. However, I prefer the sound of the Grado Black and Silver to either of those cartridges.
So a strong recommendation for those with a compatible turntable. Grado also makes these in Pmount (T4P) so good for those sleek tables from the 1980s as well. I intend on trying a Grado Blue P mount for my other Technics table which uses that style of cartridge.

Shure Whitelabel DJ Turntable Cartridge Review

Shure Whitelabel DJ Turntable Cartridge
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you want the best sound quality, Ortofon is pretty much the way to go, but that's not to say the whitelabels are bad. They aren't by a long shot. Top of the line for probably the second best sounding cartridge manufacturer. But the big reason DJs grab these is their spectacular grip on a record. I've never seen one of these skip, ever. If you're a rough DJ or you like to scratch, get this. The downside to that is that it has been known to wear out vinyl faster than other cartridges, but if you read the instructions and weigh it down less (say 2.0 max) you should be fine. Top notch needle.

Grado Prestige Black P Mount Turntable Phono Cartridge Review

Grado Prestige Black P Mount Turntable Phono Cartridge
Average Reviews:

I saw this recommended for use with the Panasonic Technics SLBD20D Semi Automatic Turntable, but it cannot be used with that turntable due to a pronounced hum, even with the ground wire attached. This may be a good cartridge with a different turntable, one with a shielded or distant motor, but not with the SLBD20D. In fact, a brief Google search after I tried to use this cartridge with this turntable produced many references to "the infamous Grado hum" - so perhaps it has this problem with other turntables as well. This problem should surely be mentioned.

Stanton T55USB USB Belt-Drive DJ Turntable with 500.v3 Cartridge Review

Stanton T55USB USB Belt-Drive DJ Turntable with 500.v3 Cartridge
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I reviewed a number of turntables and decided on this one. It was a good choice. The delivery was on time and it did not take very long to set it up. I chose to use the line-in mode as I have a good soundcard on the PC and prefer not to burden it with extra USB drivers if it is not necessary. Based on reading the reviews, I had already downloaded the latest Audacity and played with it a little bit so there was nothing extra to do with that. The overall turntable setup took about 30 minutes including balancing the stylus.
My first run-through was just setting it up and playing an album to see how it operates. I didn't initially get a cleaning kit and soon discovered (relearning lessons from many, many years ago) one is absolutely needed. The last time I had a turntable was when any albums I purchased I kept protected and cleaned etc. The album I chose (One that was never put to CD and had to find it online) was produced back in the 80s (and therefore used). It was not in 'mint' condition so it had a number of 'pops' and 'clicks' on it. The cleaner took most of them out. Audacity was able to cleanup what was left except for a couple of songs.
I won't go into too much other detail about recording the album to the PC as this review is about the turntable. I will say it was worth searching the net for information on using Audacity and what is recommended etc.
I have had the turntable about a month now and have run through a number of albums at different times. I do like the pitch adjustment as the turntable has a built in strobe so you can keep the speed accurate. There has been no problems with the turntable and it seems to be the same reliable type of turntable I experienced from Stanton 'back in the day'. Only this time I can feed it directly into the PC. I like that.

Audio-Technica AT120E/T 1/2" Mount Cartridge .3 x .7 mil Review

Audio-Technica AT120E/T 1/2 Mount Cartridge .3 x .7 mil
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've owned many budget cartridges in my vinyl life. Grado,ADC and many Audio Technica. They aparently still make cartridges with great skill in Japan. In the under 100.00 price range, AT makes the 120. 110, 95 and quite a few others. They have different degrees of performance however none are unworthy. All are musical and fun. I will try and avoid cliche' when assessing the 120.
The 120 will handle all types of music well, but seems particularly well suited for rock. It has a full sound and does not appear to have weaknesses or exagerations in any of the musical bands. It breaks in fully at about 50 hours and lasts around 500 hours (my experience). Just for a thrill, I got in touch with Turntableneedles.com. They are a reliable internet vendor with good manners and a ton of information about cartridges. On their advice, I decided to upgrade the existing 3x7 diamond tip with an genuine Audio Technica nude diamond (AT125). When I did this, the 120 went to a whole new level in sonic performance. I have had a couple of good MM carts in the past, a mid level Grado MM, an Ortfon MC and one of Audio Technica's higher level MM's called the 150. With the upgraded needle, which only costs 80 bucks, the cartridge can give better mid level cartridges a serious challenge. Extended soundstage, instrument individuality, and significantly more musical clarity.
So, the stock AT120 is a great cartridge and does nothing wrong. It can easily and relative inexpensively upgraded for about 80 dollars and what you are left with is a true performer that will give you a long vacation from the urge to upgrade. Consider this as a possible solution to your search for the ultimate sound without overpaying and consequently feeling shorted.
A bow and hearty congratulations fo Audio Technica for respecting the serious music listener where it matters most, true value!

Technics SL-BD22 Stereo Audio Turntable Review

Technics SL-BD22 Stereo Audio Turntable
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Operation of this turntable is smooth with regards to accurate pitch and speed adjustment and the auto-return tone arm mechanism is flawless.
However, the downfall of this Technics turntable is an annoying audible static -like intermittent noise heard on quiet passages of music. I made absolute sure the ground wire was well secured and I even tested this 'table on another stereo system and still the annoying noise was present. Apparently, it may be something inherent in between the belt-motor and the output wiring. I tested another Technics table of the same model number and, yup, you guessed it...that same noise is there. It could have something to do with a design flaw or something that is just inherent with a non-direct drive frequency generated turntable...On a consumer electronics web-site another owner/reviewer of the SL-BD22 had the same exact problem ! So, it could be very much a problematic theme with regards to the designing of the table motor mechanism.
After this experience, I upgraded to the Technics SL-1200M3D. WOW ! A major world of difference. It didn't come cheap but the quality and durability is something to behold and so what if it's not an automatic (one less thing to break down) !
The SL-BD22 is basically a no frills 'table and will play records nicely. BUT, if yours comes with a static or humming sound no matter how much adjusting you do, it's a possibility it could be that design flaw...

Grado Prestige Black P Mount Turntable Cartridge Review

Grado Prestige Black P Mount Turntable Cartridge
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Like many people that are buying this product, they're probably fairly new to vinyl, and they were ready to spend a little more on a good cartridge. This was my case.
I use a Pioneer PL-670 which is designated for P-Mount carts. Before buying the Grado, I was using the Audio-Technica 311 (which is pretty good and half the cost of the Black). After installing the Grado and testing it out (Morrison Hotel, 180 gram vinyl), I wasn't too impressed. So I did a couple of comparisons, switching between the AT 311 and the Grado Black. Eventually I decided the Grado is a little cleaner and brings out more subtle details than the AT 311, but it's still felt like the wow factor wasn't there.
Since then, the cart has grown on me, and I realize that the difference is there, and that it is better than my old cart, I guess I just thought I would be blown away on the first listen.

I was looking for a new cartridge/stylus that would be affordable, easy to work with, and which would sound good. Upon ordering, I wondered if this would be the road to disappointment. I got my cartridge in the mail, hooked it up, and it is a great improvement on what I'd been using for years. I am so glad I got this. I played a record which sounded unlistenable previously, due to radial scratches, and it sounded just fine, whereas before it sounded like a defective record. So, just there I got my money's worth. I cannot speak for the so called audiophiles, but for me this is excellent!

Ortofon Concorde Arkiv Kit - DJ Cartridge includes extra stylus Review

Ortofon Concorde Arkiv Kit - DJ Cartridge includes extra stylus
Average Reviews:

I don't claim to know everything about vinyl. I know this though I bought to replace the factory cartridge that came with the TTUSB by ION (Numark) and made many many vinyl rips using an external soundcard (MBox). I know that the TTUSB is a MAJOR weak link in the chain, but this cartridge seriously lacks the clarity and accuracy it boasts. The only comparison I have on the TTUSB are rips made with the factory cartridge, and the factory cartridge although it sounds very thin and harsh, it has way more high end. Compared to my rips made on my brothers Music Hall TT with a Goldring Cartridge, this sounds down right MUDDY. I can remedy this to some degree by turning up the treble on the EQ, but why should I have to? I just don't believe also that the cheap TTUSB is taking all of the clarity out of the Arkiv. The rips I made with this cartridge have become no longer listen-able to me now, so I would not recommend this one. Like I said above though I do not have all the pieces in place to say for sure...
