Elation control DP-DMX 20L Four Channel Dimmer Pack 600 Watts/ch Review

I use DMX dimmers for concerts, stage shows, and special effects. I looked at dimmers that cost hundreds or thousands more. I don't have that kind of money to lay out for simple dimming. I have used these much-criticized "cheap" dimmers for years with no complaints. Recently I ruined a dimmer by accidentally running to many par cans at once. I know some guys can diagnose the issue and solder in a new $1.00 part-but not me. I bought this dimmer based on the Elation reputation plus the specs looked better than my previous dimmer. I have been told all the different brands are all made in the same place in China. They are either cheap copies with inferior components or they are good units that use quality components per the manufacturer's request. Here is what I found with this pack. The metal case is thicker than the cheaper versions I have owned. This is a plus since we abuse the dimmers at every event. The old case had hanger brackets that would bend over time...not this pack. The DMX address function is easy to use. This pack uses a digital display so you just select the address by pushing a button until the led displays the proper address. The product also functions as a stand-alone dimmer/flasher. If you are a DJ and don't manually program par cans, you can just set the pack to use one of the pre-programmed patterns. Just plug in your par cans, and the show goes on. Also note that this is also a SWITCH PACK. Cheaper dimmer packs act only as dimmers. You can't use a regular dimmer pack to run non-dimming lights like lasers, fog machines, and other effect lighting. This pack is programmable so that it will act as as a on-off unit. Say you want to control a spinning dance light, from a distance. Set the pack to act as a switch and you will have the ability to control your effect light through the dimmer pack and dmx controller. It is easy to do all of this. Just read the instructions. So far this dimmer has worked well for us. We would buy more units without a second thought.

Great price and very accurate dimmer control. The ability to switch it from dimmer to on/off is a great feature. Today I need it as a dimmer, but the option to switch it on/off gives me more options for the unit. Better price than the others I have purchased, but provides the same control over my lights.

American DJ Light Copilot II Complete 8CH On/Off Control System With Timer Review

Very good product for the price. Easy to operate and provides a good show when used with a variety of lights. I recommend using the audio RCA input for the trigger. I was a little confused when I noticed a 9V power supply input on the back of the controller. At first I thought I needed a external power supply (which is not provided in the box) but realized the controller is actually powered from the relay pack.

Eliminator Lighting Dimmer Packs ED-15 Special Effects Lighting and Equipment Review

Eliminator Lighting Dimmer Packs ED-15 Special Effects Lighting and Equipment
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have an ED-15 "Eliminator" dimmer pack. I didn't get it from Amazon. However, the description of this unit here on Amazon shows up with text that has nothing to do with the unit (and different descriptions each time: once it was for a video game, once for a video camera). Make sure you're looking at what you think you're looking at, before you buy.
The rest of this review is for the ED-15 I have, which is a 4 channel lighting dimmer, period - no video capability, no monsters, just a dimmer.
It works, but it has some issues. I like it because it has 4 analog inputs, which take 0-10v control voltages, to set the lighting brightness. This means it's easy to control from the sort of hardware you can make on your own, with a little knowledge of electronics.
As a dimmer under the analog line control, it's imprecise. When you vary the input control voltage, the brightness of the bulbs does follow, but erratically, and it takes a moment to settle at the new brightness. I used to own a Leviton dimmer that was rock solid and smooth in dimming, so I find the behaviour of this unit a little annoying in that regard. But it's a lot cheaper.
At one point there was a power flicker at my house, and all the lighting channels went into some bizarre mode where they all flickered very rapidly. I thought the device had fried, and it wasn't until I unplugged it and then, out of curiosity, plugged it back in, that I found out it had survived, and just needed to be power cycled. This makes me a little nervous about using it for long term unattended operation, though.
It drives the stated wattage without much noise (faint buzzing) and without getting very hot.
It works well with the (expensive) dimmable LED bulbs that are coming out.
All said, it's not a bad unit; I wish the dimming was smoother.
Addendum: I've starting using it with homebrew DMX control software, instead of the analog voltage lines, and it's rock solid under DMX, including being tolerant of slow DMX signals. (DMX devices are supposed to be tolerant of them, and it's nice when they are). Bumping this up to 4 stars. Note that it takes a 3 pin plug for the DMX, not the standard-mandated 5 pin - a common shortcut that many manufacturers take, and it saves a few pennies on cabling, but be careful you don't plug in a cable from audio gear by mistake, which often uses the same kind of 3 pin plug. You'll damage your gear.
