(More customer reviews)As someone who has directly owned many top end systems from JBL/Crown/EAW/etc. down to Peavey/Gemini/Behringer, I am very familiar with quality. Many times the difference in quality between the top end and the bottom end is very minimal yet the price difference is extreme. For this reason, when I needed a tiny portable system that I could set up in 20-30 minutes for small DJ gigs, The new Gemini 18" was a viable option. Without getting technical with wattage vs. decibels (look it up) and acoustics, a properly tuned 18" cabinet with ADEQUATE wattage can only create so many decibels no matter what name brand you purchase. In other words, this cabinet will produce (roughly) the same amount of sound as most high end subs (powered or unpowered) at the same wattage-within a few decibels. There is certainly a lot more to be said here about frequency response, watts per meter, etc. That is for you to research. However, if you expect this or any other single 18" sub to knock you down like a large nightclub system that includes 4 or 8 (double 18) sub cabinets, you will be disappointed.... unless you do a gig in a closet.
This sub performs great if properly placed in the room for which you are performing. For the price, I can buy 2 of these in place of a single cerwin vega sub, for example. There is no question that 2 18's will outperform 1 single 18" every time (even if the Cerwin has more power - even double the power. So, price vs performance....the Gemini 18's are great. If you want more bass, buy more cabinets, period. If you want to kill people with thump and boom like the high end night clubs, buy 16 of them. I think you get the point.
I have compared these to other 18" powered subs. They all are so close in bass response that price, features, and portability are the only remaining factors. Price-these are currently the cheapest. If you want light weight subs that perform as well as these, Carvin makes an 18" sub that weighs far less, even less than my powered tops. It is ridiculous how light. However, they cost around $180 more per speaker(that includes shipping). The features on the Gemini are actually better than the Carvin (Dual inputs vs. single input & sweepable crossover). The Cerwin's/JBL's have more wattage but with research and experience you'll find that the increase in wattage brings very minimal increase in decibels so your paying a lot more for very little gain.
In conclusion, this sub has deep/rich bass when properly placed in a room or hall. It has adequate wattage and features, especially for this price range. For small DJ/band gigs, these are perfect. I am completely satisfied.
I would give it 5 stars but it would have to be free and able to fill an arena with one sub. Short of that I have no complaints.
Note to other reviewers - Before "knocking" this or any other subwoofer cabinet, make sure you have performed the proper research on (wattage vs. decibels). Also research decibels and frequencies vs. room volume and dimensions. Then, apply what you learned and assess the new results. What you will probably find is that you were using the sub improperly or with inadequate quantity for a given space or desired volume level. In short, user error is most likely the problem, not the speaker.
