(More customer reviews)I will admit, I was initially hesitant to purchase an amplifier from an audio company I'd rarely heard of at a price that sounds too good to be true. However, Seismic Audio surprised me with great quality considering the price I paid.
The LE-2000 comes with two different options for audio input, either through a pair of XLR connections or through a pair of 1/4" TRS connections. As for output, two sets of positive/negative binding posts for use with bare wires, forks, or banana plugs are provided, as well as three Speakron connections in the rear. These three Speakron outputs are provided for channel 1/channel 2 or bridged modes. The binding posts can be bridged as well when bridging any connection; one must flip a switch located in the rear from "stereo" to "bridge". A ground/lift switch is also provided.
The controls are very simple on this amplifier. The only dials and switches available are the two gain knobs located in the front which are labeled from 0dB to +24dB, the power switch, a 110-120/220-240 voltage switch, and the stereo/bridge & ground/lift switches mentioned earlier.
The provided indicators are for power, signal, and clipping, and I have found them all to work accurately. The only small thing I noticed with the indicator lights is that the "clip" indicators will light up after turning off the amplifier and a source at the same time, and will slowly dim away after about ten seconds. Nothing major; the clip lights worked perfectly when I tested them by running too loud of a signal through them. There are also indicators provided above the gain knobs ranging from -10dB to +6dB, and I found that particularly handy when trying to get my signal right at my desired level. Other amplifiers I have seen have only provided "signal" and "clip" indicators, nothing else.
As far as the overall build of the LE-2000, it actually feels rather sturdy. I still wouldn't recommend dropping it, but the amp's casing does not feel like a bunch of cheap plastic. Its metal casing seems well-built. The binding posts are made of plastic, but don't feel flimsy. They close tightly and work well. Four rubber feet come on the bottom of the amplifier, but can be removed by unscrewing them if needed. For the price, it's a steal.
How does it sound? I used the two 1/4" connections in the rear of the amplifier hooked up to a CD player. I then used banana plugs in the binding posts which ran to two speaker cabinets. I must say, I was very impressed. There was minimal hiss and absolutely no "hum". The amplifier drove the speakers cleanly, even at high volume levels. It was easy to see where I stood with the -10 to +6dB indicators above the gain knobs. I never had a problem with distortion or clipping of any sort, and the amp still was fine even after running speakers at high volume for half an hour.
The one problem I have with this unit is the absence of a crossover. This wasn't a problem for me using full-range speakers, but those who wish to drive a subwoofer may miss this feature. It's likely you could purchase a separate crossover unit and the total cost will still be less than a competing 2000 watt amplifier, but some may not want to have to sacrifice another 1-2 units of rack space for something like that.
Still, this unit is wonderful, has great and simple features and options, sounds clean, works well, and is amazingly priced! What more could one ask for?
